Pohela Boishakh

The Bengali New Year is observed as a public holiday in Bangladesh. The day is marked with singing, processions, and fairs. Traditionally, businesses start this day with a new ledger, clearing out the old. Singers perform traditional songs welcoming the New Year. People enjoy classical jatra plays in the village areas. People wear festive dress with women decking their hair with flowers. White-red color combinations are particularly popular. People of Bangladesh prepare and enjoy varieties of traditional festive foods on Pahela Boishakh. These include different types of pithas (rice cakes), panta bhaat (watered rice), ilish maachh bhaji (fried hilsa fish) and lots of special bhartas (mashed vegetables). At our school we celebrate this festival with full of colors, and in a grand way. There is various food and other stalls hosted by teachers, parents and some shops. Parents, students, teachers, admin and support staff took part in the event spontaneously and makes it a success. Everyone was adorned in red and white outfits and festive makeup, wondering whether to visit the stalls, munch on some fuchka or candy floss, watch monkey dance or the snake charmer.
